5 Fascinating Facts About Perfume

Scent sensitivity seems to be on the rise these days. Many schools, workplaces, and public areas are touting scent-free zones. Unlike what the allusive advertisements would like us to think, perfumes and colognes are just pretty-smelling chemical concoctions that cover up the nasty body odour indicating a poor diet and lazy digestive system. Not all perfumes are made this way though! Essential oils or specially-formulated lines like Pacifica are entirely natural and smell amazing. Here are five facts that will help to debunk some of the myths around perfume:

  1. There are over 600 chemical ingredients that have been linked to cancer or are believed toxic to the reproductive system. Many are used to manufacture perfume and cologne.
  2. In 1986, the National Academy of Sciences grouped fragrances with insecticides, heavy metals, solvents, food additives and certain air pollutants as the six categories of chemicals that should be given high priority for neurotoxicity testing. According to their report, 95% of chemicals used in fragrances are synthetic compounds derived from petroleum. They include benzene derivatives, aldehydes and many other known toxic substances linked to cancer, birth defects and allergic reactions.
  3. Ethanol is a principal chemical in perfume and cologne (and hair spray, shampoo, shaving cream, soap, and nail polisher) that can cause fatigue, irritation of the eyes and upper respiratory tract, and produce a loss of muscular coordination.
  4. Perfumery has used a number of aromatic sources like plants, animals, and synthetic sources in the making of perfumes. Attention vegans and animal lovers: animal sources include ambergris, castoreum, musk, rom terpenes, honeycomb, and civet (take note next time you go to buy a perfume or cologne).
  5. The word “perfume” comes from Latin per fumum, which means “through smoke”

Top 3 Weekend Tips to Feel Better

Everyone’s a little different when it comes to their weekend habits. Some take the time to prep and plan their meals for the following week, while others tend to let so loose they resolve to go on a diet every Monday. Being that it’s our first Saturday open here at I Love Health, I thought I’d discuss this habit that I know some of you might have.

Between the classic Saturday night out and Sunday morning brunch, we can easily rack up more sugar and unhealthy fats in our diet than we’d like. Usually, these food and drinking binges are “resolved” with thoughts like I’ll be good tomorrow, or I’ll start my diet on Monday. Unfortunately, these are short-term fixes to long-term problems. The choice to be healthy isn’t always the easiest one. Your goals to lose weight, sleep better, or have less gas after dinner won’t occur without your own motivation to achieve them. Your choice to be healthy might surprise your friends, you could even get some strange looks when you turn down another beer or sweet potato fries with chipotle mayo. But don’t lose faith! By honouring your improved lifestyle choices, you get closer and closer to your goals. You will never regret eating better in the morning. Ever.

All that being said, here are three things you can do right now to make your weekends healthier.

1. Drink water when you get home from a night out. Given that it’s almost patio season, drink water when you get home from your afternoon out too. Alcohol is dehydrating (so is dancing, if that’s your thing). Your blood is 83% water. When you rob your cells of water, your entire body does not function properly. If you have a headache in the morning, drink more water. Do not have a Tylenol, as the combination of alcohol and Tylenol is one of the top reasons for liver disease. Instead, add a few drops of ConcenTrace mineral drops (available at the store) and lie down for a bit.

2. Ask for a side of vegetables instead of a side of hash browns at brunch. Greasy food might feel better in the moment, but long term (even just an hour later) you’ll be happy you went for the green stuff. At the very least, take a greens supplement first thing to bring your body back to an alkaline state. I recommend Barlean’s Greens (also available at the store). Cherry, chocolate, and tropical flavours are all back in stock!

3. Get to bed before 4 AM. Or whenever it is you get home. It might sound kind of lame but your body loves being on a sleeping schedule. I don’t mean to say don’t go out and have fun. We all need those nights once in a while! But it will take a toll on your system if you’re doing it every Friday and Saturday night. Sleep is when your body repairs and rejuvenates. Given that weekends are when we all usually relax, why don’t you try actually relaxing one night instead of going to the bar? Try it once, you never know right? If you’re having troubles sleeping, come by the store and check out our selection of natural sleep aids.

Happy Saturday!

Tips on Tahini

We got some jars of Country Fresh sesame seed butter (tahini) in the store last week, so I thought I’d share some of my favourite ways and reasons to use it! It’s a staple in my kitchen.

Hummus: Combine tahini with chickpeas and you get a complete protein! Be gone the idea that vegans and vegetarians don’t get enough protein. This is one of the tasiest and easiest ways to incorporate tahini into your meals. Add a dollop of hummus on to your quinoa or brown rice, inside of a wrap, and with sliced up veggies (or use your fingers, which I have been found guilty of!)

Smoothies: Instantly add some calcium, protein, and healthy fat to your smoothies. Makes for a deliciously creamy taste and texture.

Snack: Spread some tahini on sprouted manna bread for a quick and healthy snack

Dessert: Makes amazing homemade halvah

Salad Dressing: Make an easy creamy salad dressing! * = available at the store

1 tbsp apple cider vinegar*

1-2 tbsp tahini*

1 tsp dijon mustard

1 tsp honey or agave*

1/2 tsp salt

1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil

Optional: a few drops of hot sauce

Shake or whisk together and store in the fridge for up to seven days

Did I mention it’s local? Grab a jar today!
